About the Film
It’s Called Cheating, Honey is a short romantic comedy about modern love, dating apps, and the absurd ways people look for connection. The story follows James, a man trapped in a miserable marriage, who turns to an AI chatbot for advice and ends up falling for someone online: only to find out his match isn’t quite who he expected.
Created during my Film Minor at Inholland University of Applied Sciences, the film uses humor and irony to explore how technology reshapes intimacy and how digital escapism collides with real-world relationships.
My Role
I worked as Director of Photography, handling all lighting, color design, and editing. I developed the film’s visual style, managed lighting setups to shape mood and emotion, and edited the final cut to balance rhythm, humor, and storytelling flow.
I shaped the film’s visual identity and post-production. The goal was to balance a warm, relatable rom-com tone with subtle visual storytelling: using color temperature shifts, intentional framing, and lighting contrasts to mirror the emotional distance between the characters.
In editing, I focused on rhythm, comedic pacing, and transitions that accentuate awkward tension and irony.
The Premiere
The film premiered at a student showcase I co-organized at the Kinepolis cinema in the Mall of the Netherlands. I helped coordinate the event logistics, built the Lu.ma sign-up platform for attendee registration, and implemented a QR-based digital ticketing system for entry management. In addition to this we employed POV Cam as a way for the audience to participate in creating shared pictures. The premiere drew a large audience of students, lecturers, and guests turning the screening into a memorable community event celebrating creative storytelling.
The Outcome
Awarded best Picture of the Film Minor
The film received exceptional feedback for its cinematography, timing, and tone, particularly for its closing reveal set to Escape (The Piña Colada Song), a moment that captured both humor and heart. The cohesive blend of visual storytelling, editing rhythm, and lighting direction was praised for elevating a student project into a polished and emotionally resonant short film.
The premiere’s success further strengthened the group’s presentation and audience engagement, setting a high benchmark for future student productions.
