Overview
The Cloud is a fine dining restaurant by Käfer, located in the BMW Welt in Munich.
Before its official opening, the experience was introduced through a multisensory popup event called “A Nomad’s Path”a culinary journey through four thematic worlds designed to embody transformation, travel, and connection.
Working alongside Studio Lafer, who developed the conceptual and visual direction, I was responsible for the technical and experiential implementation from synchronized lighting and sound design to the digital infrastructure and booking system that supported both the popup and the permanent restaurant.
Approach
The goal was to merge culinary storytelling with immersive technology, creating a seamless atmosphere that evolved throughout each stage of the evening.
My task was to translate this artistic concept into a technically reliable system that could synchronize lights, sounds, and visual elements in real time: while remaining intuitive for the staff to operate.
When the permanent The Cloud by Käfer restaurant launched, the same philosophy extended into the digital domain: a smooth, guest-centric booking and logistics experience connecting BMW’s internal systems, Käfer’s operations, and external partners.
Chapter one: A Nomad's Path
Technical Implementation
The popup served as a four-part immersive prelude to the later The Cloud by Käfer restaurant: a limited, reservation-only dining journey through four distinct sensory worlds:
Nomadic Earth – grounding and tactile, inspired by desert tones and soft percussion
Latin Fire – vibrant and rhythmic, a celebration of warmth and motion
Baltic Purity – calm, aquatic, and minimal, echoing northern seas
Bushland Essence – smoky and introspective, evoking open air and campfire light
Each world featured a dedicated soundtrack, lighting composition, and introductory video, all coordinated through a single control and booking infrastructure that I developed for the event.
Show control & synchronisation
I created a QLab-based show control system to synchronize lighting, music, and video transitions across the four worlds.
Each act began with an introductory video followed by immersive lighting and ambient audio, all triggered from a single, unified cue timeline.
The system allowed staff to run the show with one button, while QLab handled crossfades, OSC-based audio-light synchronization, DMX control and automated transitions.
Lighting & Audio Design
Each scene was programmed to express its unique identity:
Nomadic Earth – warm ambers, grounded textures, steady percussion
Latin Fire – vivid reds, rhythmic pulses, high-energy tempo
Baltic Purity – cool whites and blues, spacious sound, slow gradients
Bushland Essence – low warmth, subtle flickers, layered natural tones
This ensured the evening flowed as one continuous sensory narrative rather than four disconnected courses.
Website &
Booking
Together with Studio Lafer, I designed and implemented the event microsite, introducing the concept and handling all slot-based reservations.
Guests could book dinner experiences directly, with automatic confirmations and synchronized data exports for Käfer’s internal service management.
The design mirrored the event’s atmosphere: quiet transitions, muted palettes, and flowing animations that hinted at the four worlds.
Chapter two: The Cloud
Technical Implementation
Following the success of A Nomad’s Path, the experience evolved into a permanent fine-dining restaurant inside BMW Welt.
I was responsible for translating the event’s atmosphere into a lasting digital and operational ecosystem spanning from website design to custom booking infrastructure and visual presentation.
Website Design & Development
The restaurant’s official website was created in collaboration with Studio Lafer and developed by me on WordPress, chosen for its versatility and plugin-based extensibility.
The design language carried forward the visual DNA of A Nomad’s Path: fluid motion, soft gradients, and understated typography.
We implemented:
A custom-coded theme optimized for speed, accessibility, and responsive performance
Localized content modules to accommodate international guests
Integrated analytics and SEO tooling for Käfer’s marketing and operations teams
The result was an elegant digital identity that could evolve easily with new events, menus, and campaigns.
Custom Reservation & Logistics System
To complement Käfer’s hospitality backend, I built and designed a custom booking tool and a custom reservation workflow tailored to the BMW Welt environment.
Using Zenchef’s API as a foundation, I developed middleware logic that:
Synced reservations with BMW Welt’s internal scheduling tools
Automated confirmations and transport coordination with the external shuttle provider
Offered a secure, staff-facing dashboard for tracking guest flow and preferences
The system ensured every booking from guest selection to arrival logistics remained synchronized across all partners while maintaining a seamless, branded guest experience.
Result
The immersive concept evolved into a permanent fine-dining destination, seamlessly blending storytelling, design, and technology into one unified experience.
The integrated approach: from pre-visualization and event synchronization to web design and a custom booking ecosystem, which created a cohesive narrative that carried through every touchpoint. The popup generated strong audience engagement and critical attention, while the permanent restaurant established a refined digital and operational foundation. Together they strengthened Käfer’s brand presence within the BMW Welt, streamlined guest logistics, and positioned The Cloud as a distinctive culinary landmark where innovation and emotion meet.
